Here I was trying to decide what the topic would be for me to write about today, when it hit me – communication. We all have different ways of communicating, and times when we’re more effective. Some people are more visual and like to watch a video, others like to hear podcasts, and then there are those who like to read it for themselves.
My favorite communication is reading. I suppose this stems from the fact that as a child I could get away from my “hard life,” and travel into foreign, exotic lands through the pages of my books. I loved imaging what a troll or dragon would really look like, and sometimes I got wonderful ideas on talking to new friends, or ideas for a new hobby.
I try to vary my communication with others to fit the person. Some of my friends adore email and enjoy each and every photo or video I send them. Others rarely check it at all, but love to get a phone call or card in the mail. At times when I am dealing with a difficult situation with family, I may write a letter so I can edit what I’m saying and take my time to express what I truly feel.
I also like to communicate with humor whenever possible. It lightens a stressful situation and adds a smile or laughter to help break the ice with someone new. Many scientists have stated that much of our communication is done through body language, especially facial expressions and touch. Everyone knows how much a hug soothes when you’re sad, and the wagging tail of a friendly dog.
So the next time you are having a communication breakdown, remember to check and see how well you are communicating. How well do your tone of voice, posture, and method of communication match what you are trying to convey. If you are unsure of your message how will your listener understand you?
