We all have bad days. Times when we lose our temper, our stress levels rise and we lose our perspective and happy smile. So it’s important to have a game plan to get back on track when things go wrong. Here are a few of the ideas I use to get myself centered and balanced when things seem to be headed in the wrong direction:
- Take some time alone. This is my number one reviver. If you feel upset, rushed, tired or not yourself, taking just 15 minutes alone to breathe deeply and relax can rejuvenate you with energy. This is a great pick-me-up.
- Listen to your favorite music. With MP3 players everywhere, and radios and CD players in every room, it’s easy to listen to your favorite songs. Pick what fits your mood; for me that could be anything from country hits, heavy metal, or some Weird Al Yankovic parodies. Whatever changes your state of mind and gets you moving.
- Have a good laugh. Keep funny books, CD’s of your favorite comedians, quotes or pictures that make you smile. If you’re really down, find your favorite funny friend and talk about something you both enjoy. Laughter is great medicine for all your ailments.
- Copy someone you admire. Almost everyone finds bad things are easier to deal with when they happen to someone else. (It’s why we always have such great advice that nobody wants to hear.) Pick a person you think could deal with your current problem easily and copy some of their coping skills.
- Get some air. If you’re inside, go outside for some sunshine and fresh air. Watch the birds flying overhead, giggle at the antics of a squirrel and forget about your problems for a few minutes. When you’re done things will seem just a bit easier to deal with.
- Stomp your feet and punch a pillow. Sometimes when you’re stuck dealing with someone who acts like a jerk, or is in a bad mood, it can make you crazy. So take a moment, go mutter and gripe in the bathroom, make a face, or punch a pillow. Give your anger a harmless focus and it will take the edge off so you can get things done.
- Remember you’re a work in progress. We often catch ourselves being negative, thoughtless or rude for one reason or another. Instead of berating yourself and adding to your guilt, remember that you’re not perfect. If you can make amends then do so. If not, pledge to start fresh tomorrow. Or give yourself a do-over and try again. Practice makes perfect.
- Keep a list of things that to bring you out of a bad mood. By having a list on hand you can find something to make you smile and make your blue mood history. Here are some of my favorites.
