Yes, it’s true I am 35 years old, but trust me, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a good laugh! I loved cartoons as a child, but as I got older and was working and it just seemed silly to watch a cartoon. I have no children, so there was no excuse I could make, and everyone seemed to watch more serious shows. However I did still watch some oldies like Scooby Doo, The Flintstones, and Bugs Bunny. Some favorites never die. I just didn’t tell most people about it. But about five or six years ago, I came home one afternoon and turned on Spongebob Squarepants. Many of my nieces and nephews loved it, I’d been hearing about it for years. As I watched, I felt my tension melt at the utter silliness of the show. The crazy antics of Spongebob, and most especially his laugh hooked me from the start.
It just struck a funny bone, and I’ve watched ever since. At the time, the world seemed serious and worried. There were so many murders and rapes, crimes of all kinds. Friends and family were ill, had too many bills and were just plain tired. Since then, I’ve learned to lighten up. No matter what is going on in your life or around you, there is still always something to smile about.
Recognizing that and learning to relax has helped me immensely. I’ve read many humorous books, watched many more comedies and cartoons, and in general learned to take my failures less intensely than before. I also feel happier. When I get depressed or upset, as we all do, I give myself full permission for fun and silly things. It has definitely helped me have a better perspective on life, and I feel better sooner, and get over little irritants more quickly than before.
These days I have become hooked on a far more adult cartoon – South Park. I avoided it for a long time because I thought it only had fart jokes and dirty jokes which I feel grow stale very quickly and don’t take much imagination. Since I started watching I’ve found it to be creative, unexpected and very, very funny. Of course, we won’t all have the same taste in cartoons, but we can probably all agree that they are fun to watch. What are your favorites?
